EU Commissioner Blog

Margot Wallström, EU Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Communication, has a blog!

I have decided to write a diary during my five year term to give people an idea of what it is like to be a Commissioner and how the EU looks from the inside. (Yes, the blog phenomenon has not escaped my attention!).

(…)

We politicians are accountable to 450 million Europeans and you expect us to work together, to be effective, to communicate with you and to give you a voice. We can never be allowed to forget that. That is what gives me my political motivation.

Although there is no RSS feed available yet, there is a note stating that “.. interactive functions of this weblog are under construction and will be available soon !”

Yay! An encouraging example which, hopefully, many others will follow.

German ‘Blog’ in Print

The Rheinische Post, a traditional Düsseldorf newspaper, has launched Opinio - a cross-media magazine which is meant to “transfer the culture of weblogs into print.”

The ideas is to build a community of “readers writing for readers” posting their reports and pictures which are then reviewed and selected for print in a fortnightly issue accompanying the newspaper. Opinio will apparently be made available separately as well for 50 cents.

Aside from the notice that an editorial team reserves the right to select and edit individual contributions - I found no further information regarding the commercial distribution.

With no RSS feed either, one is left wondering whether this cross-media buzz has anything to do with weblogs at all.

Although they do seem to have a number of contributors registered already, it is perhaps a little early to judge…
