GIMP re-done in Cocoa for OSX

Seashore:

An open source image editor for Cocoa. It features gradients, textures and anti-aliasing for both text and brush strokes. It supports multiple layers and alpha channel editing. It is based around the GIMP’s technology and uses the same native file format.

Caveat:

Seashore is still undergoing development and may contain bugs so please make sure only to work on copies of important images…

Still, good value!

PC Mag Awards

IGM: It’s a Wash: Apple Tops…

Apple has beaten its PC rivals by a country mile in the latest PC Magazine awards. And the voters were the paying public, not the (non-paying) editors.

The Reader’s Choice awards saw Apple poll “far and away the highest for all vendors,” the magazine says. Apple received a score of 9.2 for its desktops and notebooks. Among portables, only IBM and Fujitsu were anywhere near Apple, both with a score of 8.4.

MacWorld UK adds

The report observes that Mac users are martial in favour of their platform, but nevertheless states: “There’s solid evidence that Macs may be worthy of devotion.”

No kidding. The proof is in the pudding!

DTV for Mac OS X

The Participatory Culture Blog announces the countdown to the August 9th release of a preview beta version of DTV for Mac OS X.

Internet TV should be open-source and based on open standards, just like blogging and podcasting. We’re working to ensure that the new mass medium of internet TV is free, accessible to all, and built with independent voices.

The Browser Wars Over?

You have been put on notice: the browser wars are over. Moz doesn’t matter. IE is irrelevant. Opera is doing a swan song. Why? In a word, iTunes. And the implications for everyone from Web publishers to you, the hyper-clocked tricked-out geek, are enormous. In fact, being the hyper geek means you can cash in on this trend now. You heard it here first.

An unlikely sounding take on the direction web based content might be taking over at Tom’s Hardware Guide - that is, at first glance - but then, given a little more thought, it might not be so unlikely after all…

Inside the Big Switch

Ars Technica’s Jon “Hannibal” Stokes on the iPod and the future of Apple Computer

If you’ve been following the Apple-to-Intel transition, you’re going to
want to read this whole article. Why? Because I’m going to do something
that I almost never do: spill insider information from unnamed sources
that I can confirm are in a position to know the score. Note that this
isn’t the start of some kind of new trend for me. It’s just that all
this information that I’ve been sitting on is about to become dated, so
it’s time to get it out there.

Tiger Stalks The Pipelines

Four Linux Pipeline editors, including one Windows user, exchange their experience and views on the advantages and disadvantages of MacOS X

Scot: The more I use the Mac, the more I wish I could afford to chuck 15 years of expertise and replace all my Windows PCs with Macs. Let’s face it, the Mac is definitely the thinking man’s (or woman’s) PC. I know that; you know that. I’m just going to bow to reality on that point. That doesn’t make it the best value or the right computer to have in all situations. But if you can afford to specify what you’re working with — and the software is there — it’s really no contest.

Richard: Ah, young Jedi, the Force is strong with you . . .welcome back from the dark side. ;)
Seriously, almost all of the truly skilled hard-core developers I know who have a choice use Macs now, probably for many of the same reasons that more than 25 percent of the people who read Developer Pipeline use some form of Mozilla as their browser. Power users appreciate the efficiencies and other advantages (Unix tools, security, etc) of OS X even more than others.

I totally admit that Windows is getting much, much better than it used to be. But Tiger is what Windows wants to be, and perhaps in another year or so, will be.

iTunes & Podcasts

Subscribing to, downloading and listening to podcasts in the new iTunes 4.9 works really well.

My first subscriptions are:

Good Value!

From another perspective, though, not everyone is so chuffed with Apple for going it alone in extended RSS for podcasting.

As Dave says:

Net-net, it would have been a really good idea to get a community review, like Microsoft did, before shipping. We could have done a lot better. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Clearly Apple has yet to grok the community idea… like Microsoft seems to have done, at least in this regard.

Update: June 30th:

Added the BBC’s Go Digital podcast to my subscriptions.

Highly recommended.

Update: July 4th

Added the Micro Persuasion Podcast!

Also. just found Edd Dumbill’s more thorough assessment of Apple’s iTunes RSS extensions.
